The soulful Chicago Book Fair was founded by Asadah Kirkland in 2016. It is the largest outdoor book fair promoting literary arts throughout the African Diaspora.  It is an all-ages, family-friendly free event located on 61st street, between Cottage Grove and Martin Luther King Drive. The Fair spans from 10:00 am – 8:00 pm. The main goal is to get more book lovers out each year and continue to promote the love of reading.

“When I started this, I had no idea this event would attract thousands to the streets of Woodlawn. I just knew I had a goal to rekindle interest in Black literary arts,” said Ms. Kirkland. “We’ve generated so much energy and excitement that the fair has been the catalyst for a new Black Literary Renaissance,” she added.

The event brings together literary organizations, elected officials, families, educators, libraries, youth groups, and celebrity, in addition to providing a platform for authors and poets to share with fans across the city. This year the Soulful Chicago Book Fair’s guest speakers were MC Lyte and Dr. Lynn Richardson. The stage show was hosted by Maggi Brown and featured live performances by JD’s revenge,  J. Daphaney, Rebel Wyld, P.O.E.T., Dee Jay Alicia, Mr. Pope, Ase’ Storytellers, Maggie Brown and an appearance by Justice Cynthia Cobbs.
